(FWA 2025/11/17)The Central Weather Administration (CWA) stated that a significant temperature drop across Taiwan is expected this week. Starting from Northern Taiwan on Tuesday and extending to the entire island by Wednesday, it will feel cool to cold. This is expected to be the strongest cold air mass since the beginning of autumn, with temperatures gradually rebounding over the weekend. The CWA also noted that when the radiational cooling effect is strong in open, suburban areas of Central and Southern Taiwan, the late-night chill and large diurnal temperature range will be more pronounced, and the public should pay attention to their health.
The CWA indicated that cold air carried by the northeast monsoon will begin affecting Taiwan on Monday (11/17). Northern Taiwan and Yilan will feel it clearly during the day, while Central and Southern Taiwan, as well as Hualien and Taitung, will feel the change on Tuesday.
Additionally, on Monday and Tuesday, the south-advancing northeast monsoon will bring moisture. Keelung’s North Coast, the Yilan region, and the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei will experience prolonged rain, with a chance of local heavy rain. Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, and Hualien will also see localized showers. Sporadic rain is also expected in Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula, and the mountainous areas of Central and Southern Taiwan.
On Wednesday, it will feel cool to cold everywhere; be sure to dress warmly when going out. The rain is expected to ease slightly, but windward areas in Northern Taiwan, Yilan, and Hualien will still have localized rain. Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula will also have sporadic showers.
On Thursday and Friday, the weather will remain under the influence of the northeast monsoon, but the cold air will be weaker compared to Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will rise slightly. Northern Taiwan, Yilan, and Hualien will still be cool, while other areas will be cool in the morning and evening. Pay attention to the large diurnal temperature range.
The CWA stated that this wave of cold air is expected to weaken starting this weekend, and temperatures will rise across the island. However, the precipitation pattern will be similar to Friday, with localized rain still possible in the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei, Keelung’s North Coast, and the eastern half of Taiwan. Other areas will see partly cloudy to clear skies.
The CWA advises the public to help the elderly and infants at home stay warm to maintain their health. As winter approaches, to improve electrical safety, the public can hire professionals to inspect household electrical outlets and wiring.
