(FWA 2025/12/30)As we approach New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), the Central Weather Administration (CWA) reports that weather patterns will shift significantly entering 2026. While the north faces rain during the countdown, a strong continental cold air mass is set to move south on Jan. 1, causing temperatures to drop noticeably across Taiwan.
🎆 Part 1: Dec. 31 New Year’s Eve (Wednesday)
Wet and Cool in the North, Stable in the South
Weather Overview: The northeast monsoon will keep the weather “wet in the north and east, sunny in the central and south.”
Northern & Eastern Taiwan: Cloud cover will be high. The Keelung North Coast and mountainous areas of Greater Taipei may see persistent rain with a chance of localized heavy rain. If you are attending countdown events in these areas, rain gear is essential.
Central & Southern Taiwan: The weather will be mostly cloudy to sunny, offering stable conditions for outdoor celebrations.
Temperature: It will be cool in the evening. Lows will range from 14°C to 18°C (approx. 13°C in Matsu). An “onion-style” (layered) outfit is recommended for late-night events.
🥶 Part 2: Jan. 1 New Year’s Day (Thursday)
Cold Air Mass Hits, Temperatures Drop
Weather Overview: A strong continental cold air mass arrives, bringing wet and cold conditions.
Northern Taiwan: Temperatures will decline throughout the day with continued rain.
Central & Southern Taiwan: Temperatures will drop significantly starting in the evening. While the plains will remain mostly cloudy, mountain areas may see sporadic rain.
Temperature:
Lows: Central/North/Yilan dropping to 14-15°C; South/East to 16-18°C.
Highs: Northern Taiwan will remain cold all day (max 17-18°C); Central and Southern regions may reach 21-25°C during the day but will cool rapidly at night.
First Sunrise: Chances of seeing the first sunrise are low in the North and East due to rain. The best chances are in the plains of Central and Southern Taiwan.
