(FWA2025/08/15) The Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act has broadened the scope of smoke-free areas. Official data shows that more than 9,000 violations have been recorded across Taiwan, with total fines exceeding NT$46 million. Hospital emergency entrances, exits, and parking areas remain the highest secondhand smoke exposure rates among the designated smoke-free zones.
Under the updated regulations, universities, kindergartens, childcare centers, and home-based childcare facilities are now entirely smoke-free. Bars and nightclubs lacking independent air-conditioning systems and enclosed indoor smoking rooms are also subject to a complete smoking ban.
Local governments continue to prioritize smoke-free enforcement in their annual inspections, with some local governments extending restrictions to bus stops, school perimeters, and areas surrounding convenience stores. By the end of 2024, a total of 33,997 smoke-free zones had been officially designated nationwide.
To reduce smoking violations near hospitals, facilities plan to intensify public education campaigns, install smoke-free alert systems, and, in certain cases, deploy detection devices to strengthen smoke-free measures both inside and outside their premises.
