Legislative Yuan (Taiwan) passed a bill on August 5 2025 that will exempt sugar-free packaged drinks—such as unsweetened tea and sparkling water—from the current 15% commodity tax. The goal is to encourage people to cut back on sugar, reduce health risks, and promote overall well-being.

Uni-President Enterprises quickly responded to the new policy, announcing manufacturer’s price cuts on its sugar-free beverages that qualify for the exemption. The company said the savings will be passed directly to consumers. However, it may take some time to update packaging, so shoppers could see differences between suggested and actual prices, as well as both old and new packaging on shelves. Final retail prices will still be set by stores.

The amendment to the Commodity Tax Act also reflects changing lifestyles. Four household appliances—televisions, video recorders, record players, and tape recorders—will no longer be taxed, making the law more in line with today’s needs.
