Recently, commercial port operators have again raised the issue of port labor shortages. According to media reports, the Ministry of Transport plans to respond through automation and strives to help operators obtain foreign labor. Scholars have analyzed that related industries have the potential risk of aging manpower. If they promote the use of foreign labor to fill the shortage of workers, they also need to consider the residency model and talent cultivation. Industry operators say that the content of grassroots work in the port is simple, but it requires exposure. After opening up to overseas Chinese, their willingness to invest is still low, so they still hope to open up migrant workers.
Recently, Hong Yingzheng, honorary chairman of the Taiwan Commercial and Port Development Association, once again pointed out that Taiwan’s ports are facing a shortage of workers, and if it continues to be unresolved, it may lead to paralysis. According to media reports, Transportation Minister Chen Shikai said that efforts will be made to help operators strive to open up foreign labor, but it needs to cooperate with the government’s overall policy and will also reduce manpower needs through terminal automation.
