(FWA 2026/10/22)Typhoon Champi continues to approach. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) stated on the morning of the 22nd that due to the weakening of steering currents, the typhoon might stall or spin after touching land, exacerbating its impact. According to the CWA’s impact probability, 6 counties and cities have reached 100%. Taipei, Taoyuan, and Keelung will announce at 8 PM tonight whether there will be a typhoon holiday tomorrow.
The CWA held a Typhoon Champi warning press conference at 8:40 AM today (22nd). Lin Ping-yu, a section chief at the CWA’s Weather Forecast Center, stated that the sea typhoon warning for Champi is still in effect. The warning zones include the eastern sea, the Bashi Channel, and the northern sea. Vessels navigating and operating nearby must be on strict alert.
Lin Ping-yu pointed out that the typhoon will move northwest, turning north-northwest. It is expected to reach the eastern sea of Taiwan tomorrow morning and be closest to Taiwan tomorrow night. However, from the 23rd to the early morning of the 24th, due to the gradual weakening of the Pacific high-pressure steering currents and the influence of the terrain, it cannot be ruled out that the typhoon may slow down, stall, or spin. If the typhoon gets closer to land, the wind and rain will be more severe.
As the typhoon approaches, coastal areas must watch out for large waves. The north coast, the eastern half (including Lanyu and Green Island), and the Hengchun Peninsula should be aware of waves over 6 meters high. The public is urged to avoid activities at the beach.
Strong winds will be most significant from tomorrow (23rd) daytime to Saturday early morning. Coastal and open areas will experience strong gusts of levels 9 to 11. The north coast, Yilan, central coastal areas, Lanyu, Green Island, and Hengchun Peninsula may even see strong gusts of level 12 or above. The plains in the western half will also have relatively strong gusts.
Regarding rainfall, there is a chance of local torrential rain or above in northern Taiwan, northern mountainous areas, and Yilan mountainous areas. Heavy or torrential rain may also occur in central mountainous areas and northern Hualien mountainous areas.
According to the CWA’s 120-hour typhoon storm impact probability forecast, the impact probability for Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Yilan County, and Hualien County has reached 100%. In addition, areas with an impact probability of over 90% include Hsinchu County (99%), Hsinchu City (99%), Green Island (99%), Miaoli County (98%), Taichung City (96%), Nantou County (96%), Lanyu (96%), Taitung County (95%), Changhua County (94%), and Yunlin County (91%).
According to the “Regulations on the Suspension of Offices and Classes due to Natural Disasters”: The average wind power reaches level 7 or above, or gusts reach level 10 or above in areas where the typhoon’s storm radius is expected to pass within 4 hours; or the rainfall reaches the reference standards of each county and city, and disasters have occurred or are likely to occur.
Taipei, Taoyuan, and Keelung, which will bear the brunt, are expected to jointly announce at 8 PM tonight whether work and classes will be suspended tomorrow.
