(FWA 2026/6/5)With the Dragon Boat Festival holiday approaching, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) reminds the public and foreigners about the severe consequences of bringing pork products into Taiwan from African Swine Fever affected areas. According to regulations, those who illegally carry pork products into the country can be punished with a maximum of 7 years imprisonment and fined up to NT$3 million.
The NIA stated that over the past year, 542 people who entered from affected countries and illegally brought pork products were each fined NT$200,000. Among them, 144 foreigners were denied entry because they could not pay the hefty fines. Furthermore, do not import pork products via international parcels. The recipient of such parcels will be fined NT$200,000 for the first offense, and NT$1 million for the second and subsequent offenses. Additionally, do not advertise illegal overseas animal quarantine objects on the internet; violators can be punished with a maximum fine of NT$150,000.
The NIA pointed out that although Taiwan was recognized as a non-endemic area by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) in April this year, the global African Swine Fever situation remains severe. The NIA will continue to work with CIQS partners to strengthen quarantine inspections at airports and ports to ensure border security.
The NIA reminds everyone to check their luggage again for prohibited meat products before returning to Taiwan. If you have any questions about whether the items you are carrying comply with regulations, please proactively ask the quarantine officers.
