In accordance with international human rights norms, Taiwan has removed HIV antibody testing from mandatory health check-up requirements and employers are not allowed to deprive foreign workers of employment rights based on their medical status.
As Taiwan does not provide subsidies for HIV treatment for non-citizens, the cost of such treatment is approximately NT$200,000 per year. As such, foreign nationals are advised to undergo HIV screening in their home countries before coming to Taiwan.
Before arriving in Taiwan, foreign workers should buy medical insurance to reduce any potential financial burden. They can also decide to undergo HIV testing at a hospital in Taiwan to better understand their health situation.
If a foreign worker is diagnosed with HIV, their right to work remains protected under Taiwanese law.
In the event of discrimination contact the 1955 Labor Consultation and Complaint Hotline for assistance.
