September is Traffic Safety Month, and this year’s theme is “People-Centered Traffic – A Culture of Stopping and Yielding.” The Ministry of Transportation and Communication (Taiwan) reminds everyone not to sacrifice safety just to save time. Whether it’s a driver rushing through an intersection or a pedestrian crossing in the wrong place, both are dangerous behaviors that can easily lead to fines. The goal is to build a safe and friendly traffic environment together.

Taichung City Government said that the road safety team has planned safe driving activities aimed especially at the group that heavily uses scooters. Riders of scooters, bicycles, and mini electric two-wheel vehicle should understand the dangers of large vehicles’ blind spots and the concept of “inner wheel difference,” as well as the rules at intersections without traffic lights.

“Inner wheel difference” means that when a vehicle turns, the rear wheels travel on a path that is closer to the inside than the front wheels. Because of this, when large vehicles turn, the front and rear wheels do not follow the same track, creating blind spots in the driver’s view. Scooters, bicycles, and pedestrians are especially at risk of being hit or pulled under during such turns.

The authorities remind everyone that when riding or driving through intersections, you must slow down, look around, and stop if needed. If pedestrians are crossing, vehicles must yield. Drivers and riders should never use their phones while moving, and pedestrians should cross quickly without looking at their phones. This is the only way for everyone to stay aware of the dangers at intersections.
