Police have recently uncovered many cases where foreigners on tourist visas were recruited as “money mules.” Scam groups lured them with promises of “high-paying jobs” or “free trips to Taiwan.” All they had to do was following instructions, withdrawing cash from ATMs, and they would receive large payments.
In Taipei City alone, 93 people have already been caught this year—far more than last year’s 52. All of them were sent to the District Prosecutors’ Office on charges of fraud and money laundering.
According to the Taipei City Police Department, scammers often recruit foreigners to avoid being tracked and to protect the masterminds behind the crimes. Police urge the public to report suspicious foreigners repeatedly using different cards to withdraw money to the police, who will dispatch officers to investigate.
